For new shore staff and new seafarersMariner's Desk Training Program
A short, hands-on curriculum: Part One for shore office staff learning HQ, Part Two for seafarers learning Mariner's Desk. Work through each module in the live app as you read — this is meant to be done, not just read.
7 modules, about 2 hours total, self-paced. No prior experience assumed.
01HQ, Module 1: finding your way around
20 minutes. Get comfortable with the layout before touching real data.
By the end you can: navigate the main screens; read the dashboard's critical issues and compliance gauge; explain the difference between Admin, Editor, Master/Chief and Viewer.
Do this
- Sign in and look at the dashboard: critical issues, today's actions, the compliance gauge, recent activity.
- Open Settings, HQ users and logins, and find your own row. Check your role.
- Switch Appearance to Dark, then back to Light.
Check yourselfA Master's role is scoped to one vessel. What can they see that a Viewer can't, and what can an Admin do that a Master can't?
02HQ, Module 2: crew and compliance
35 minutes. The consent model is the most important idea in this module: HQ proposes, the seafarer accepts.
By the end you can: add and invite a crew member; propose a certificate and explain why it isn't final until accepted; set your company's requirements; read the compliance matrix.
Do this
- Crew, then + Add employee. Create a test crew member with a real test email and invite them.
- Open their profile and propose a certificate.
- Compliance, then load the starter STCW template, and check what it filled in.
Check yourselfYou proposed a certificate update five minutes ago. Where does it sit right now, and whose action moves it to accepted?
03HQ, Module 3: vessels, roster and leave
30 minutes. Roster and leave feed the same manning picture on the dashboard.
By the end you can: add a vessel and set its minimum crewing; read a manning-gap warning; set leave approval routing and act on a request.
Do this
- Vessels, then + Add vessel. Create a test vessel and set minimum crew for two ranks.
- Roster, then assign your test crew member to it. Remove the assignment and check the gap reappears.
- Settings, leave approval routing: set it to Sequential, and explain what changes versus shore-only.
Check yourselfUnder sequential routing, who decides first, and what happens to the roster only after the final approval?
04HQ, Module 4: maintenance and reports
25 minutes.
By the end you can: create and assign a maintenance job; complete one with a part used; export company data.
Do this
- On your test vessel, add equipment, then a job against it with a recurring interval.
- Assign it to a rank. Complete it, recording one part used.
- Check the due date rolled forward, and the audit log has an entry for everything you did in this module and the last two.
- Settings, export the full company backup.
Check yourselfWhat's the difference between assigning a job to a person and assigning it to a rank, and why might you prefer the rank?
05Mariner's Desk, Module 5: getting started
15 minutes. For seafarers. The app works on its own — linking to a company adds shared visibility on top.
By the end you can: create an account; link to a company; find your way around Home.
Do this
- Open Mariner's Desk, pick a department, and create an account.
- Settings, Company link: enter the joining code you were given in Module 2.
- Return to Home and find the "needs your attention" area.
Check yourselfIf you never link to a company, does the app still track your certificates and sea service?
06Mariner's Desk, Module 6: certificates and sea service
25 minutes. Your own record — your company can only propose changes to it, never write to it directly.
By the end you can: add a certificate from a photo; log a voyage; accept or reject a proposal; log rest hours.
Do this
- Certificates, then Add: attach a photo, check the suggested fields.
- Sea service, then Add voyage.
- If your company proposed a certificate in Module 2, open it here and accept or reject it.
- Tools, Rest hours: log one rest period and one work period for today.
Check yourselfYour company proposes an edit to a certificate's expiry date. What do you see, and what happens to your record if you reject it?
07Mariner's Desk, Module 7: roster and leave
15 minutes. Leave you request here becomes a real roster entry once it's approved.
By the end you can: view your assignments; request leave and track its status; sign off a maintenance job assigned to you.
Do this
- Roster: review your assignments (populated from Module 3 if you used the same test account).
- Request leave with a type, dates and a short reason. Check its status.
- Sign off the maintenance job assigned to you in Module 4, with a comment.
Check yourselfYour leave request shows as waiting on your company. What has already happened, and what hasn't happened yet?
